¿Qué tres? Pues el Cerro Chaltén (Monte Fitz Roy), Cerro Poincenot y Cerro Saint Exupéry, o eso creemos.
Esta es la caminata que intentamos con Nic en noviembre y que tuvimos que abortar debido al mal tiempo. Se nos había quedado la espinita clavada y, ya que habíamos estado en la base de las Torres del Paine en Chile también queríamos estar en la base del Fitz Roy en Argentina.
Teníamos el tiempo justo ya que el autocar de vuelta a El Calafate salía a las seis de la tarde, motivo por el cual nos planteamos la alternativa de ir hasta la Laguna Torre, mucho más llano y asequible. Pero el día amaneció despejado y ambos caminamos bastante rápido, así que fuimos a “repetir” la excursión.
Y fue un completo acierto. La primera vez que la hicimos el tiempo fue terrible, llegando incluso a plantearnos en la Laguna Capri por qué era famosa.
Afortunadamente ahora, el último día de marzo, pudimos disfrutar de la excursión en todo su esplendor: durante casi todo el camino tienes en frente todo el macizo del Cerro Chaltén.
Y además tuvimos todavía más suerte: al ser otoño todos los árboles estaban cambiando el color del follaje por lo que las montañas estaban pobladas de bosques rojos, naranjas y amarillos.
El sendero es cuesta arriba pero la mayor dificultad es la gente, que es mucha y todos vamos a ritmos diferentes. Hay desde los grupitos que parece que les teletransportaron desde las Ramblas hasta los que parece que estén escalando el Everest. Hay sitio para todos y el sendero es lo suficientemente sencillo como para que, sin prisas, lo pueda hacer todo el mundo.
Marina y yo, por eso de ir rápido, logramos hacer los 10 km hasta llegar a la Laguna de los Tres en 2 horas y 37 minutos en lugar de en las 4 horas habituales.
El camino serpentea por bosques de lengas y ñires hasta llegar al ataque final, muy similar al de la base de las Torres del Paine, un último km de rocas grandes y resbaladizas con 400 m de desnivel positivo. Aquí es donde se nota más la presencia de otros excursionistas que representan todo el rango de niveles habidos y por haber.
Una vez en la Laguna de los Tres las vistas del Cerro Chaltén y sus hermanos son espectaculares, igual que lo son las vistas hacia el Lago del Desierto y la pampa patagónica.
Bajamos hasta la laguna y la rodeamos hasta el mirador de la Laguna Sucia, que es el lago con las aguas de un color azul más intenso que hemos visto (más que le Peyto Lake en Canadá o que el Pukaki en Nueva Zelanda).
Con la prisa que nos habíamos dado para llegar hasta la base del Fitz Roy nos sobraba el tiempo suficiente como para volver tranquilamente haciendo fotos y tomando galletas mirando a las montañas.
Incluso vimos cuatro pájaros carpinteros, de esos de cuerpo negro y cabeza roja.

The name of this trail literally stands for “The lagoon of the three”. And you’ll wonder what three? El Chaltén (Fitz Roy) hill, Poincenot hill and Saint Exupéry hill. Or at least that’s what we believe.
This is the same trail we attempted with Nic in November and had to turn around as the weather turned crazy. This became one of those pending hikes one sometimes adds to his list. Besides, we’ve been at the base of the Torres del Paine in Chile so we needed to be at the base of the Fitz Roy in Argentina.
That day we had to take a bus to get back to El Calafate at 6 PM so we considered the alternative of going to Laguna Torre instead. This last one is a flat and less challenging walk and we’d have plenty of time to do it and get to the bus terminal by 6 and earlier. But the weather of that day looked like the clear window of the millennium and we decided to make use of our fast walking skills and try our luck attempting for the second time to reach the Laguna de los Tres.
And lucky we did that. That time with Nic the weather was hideous and left us with a completely wrong idea of the trails features. We left wondering what was special about Laguna Capri.
Fortunately now, on the last day of March, we enjoyed the place at its best. It turns out that all along the way you’re facing the massif of El Chaltén.
But our luck didn’t stop here with the good climate. It was the beginning of autumn and the trees were changing the color of their leaves displaying the whole range of yellows, oranges and browns you could think of.
The trail is steep but the hardest fact is the large amount of trekkers you’ll meet on the way. This time it was meant to be the shoulder of the season and it felt crowded for us, so we don’t even want to imagine how’s the traffic during the peak. There was people of many different paces and abilities but at that time at least, there was space for everyone. The trail is not technical at all and it’s really well signed for no one to get lost or go off the trail.
Enrique and I, as we had to rush not to miss the bus, did the 10 km up to Laguna de los Tres in 2 hours and 37 minutes while it normally takes 4 hours.
The trail goes pass lenga and ñire trees forests that cover the whole trail until the last climb which is completely exposed. This last push is a km in which you gain 400 m while climbing on rocks that can be slippery as glaciar water leaches the terrain even with dry weather. At this point is when the presence of other hikers is more obvious as the trail gets narrow and the higher level of difficulty shows the real capability of the visitors.
Once you get to the Laguna de los tres, the view of the hills are amazing and so are the views towards Lago del Desierto and the Patagonic pampas.
Again we got sidetracked and descended to the lagoon shore and walked around to get to a little lookout to Laguna Sucia. Funny enough this name translates for dirty lagoon while it’s the glaciar lake with the deepest blue we’ve ever seen. Yes, the statement is taking in consideration Peyto Lake in Canada and lake Pukaki en New Zealand.
As we almost run on the way up, we had plenty of time to enjoy taking pictures of the Fitz Roy hill and get back down to town while stopping many times to take more pictures and snacking cookies on a bench with a view.
